Hatoko Kushikawa (櫛川 鳩子 Kushikawa Hatoko) is one of the main characters of Inō Battle wa Nichijō-kei no Naka de. Her ability called Over Element, allows her to control all five elements; Earth, Water, Fire, Wind and Light.

Appearance[]

Hatoko has pale pink hair that is quite wavy and her hair is almost always tied into two braids which is seen leaning on the right side and on the left side on the back, a quite big fringe and she is wearing a blue hair band with a ribbon on it, small, light pink-linen-colored eyes and she has quite thick eyebrows.

Hatoko is almost always seen wearing her school uniform, like most of the other characters. However, she also wears a light yellow cardigan that is slightly too big for her and thus partially concealing her hands. She also wears knee high socks and a pair of brown shoes, which is included in her school uniform.

Personality[]

Hatoko-0

Hatoko smiling

Hatoko is a polite air-headed girl that often takes Jurai Andō's narcissistic personality disorder antics seriously.

Hatoko also is very positive and quite childish, she usually plays around and act innocent every time and she is quite lighthearted, but she can be serious at times. She is also almost always seen with a smile on her face, and she is also very caring that she even cooks for Andō and Machi Andō (Jurai's older sister).

History[]

Childhood[]

Hatoko had been together with Jurai Andō since they were infants. Her family had been on good terms with Jurai’s family for a long time, even going on trips together each year. Their parents even sent Jurai and Hatoko to the same kindergarten.

During primary school, Hatoko was called “Yakitori” by other kids because of her surname “Kushikawa”, something she greatly disliked. However, Jurai said that was a lame nickname and said “Fire Phoenix” was better. The other kids laughed and said that name was even lamer and decided to keep calling her Hatoko. She was really happy for his help.

Another time, Hatoko set the fire alarm on because of a comedy sketch she saw on tv. She hid under the stairs, but Jurai found her and said he would apologize with her to the teachers. Jurai gave her his hand and she said it was warm. Over the years, Jurai was always recommending manga and novels to Hatoko, but she couldn’t understand them.

Middle school and a Certain Incident[]

Before starting their second year at middle school, Jurai gave up at this and didn’t recommend her novels anymore. Hatoko was relieved, but at the same time sad.

Hatoko's friends in middle school

Crying under the rain

Hatoko and Jurai met Shizumu Sagami and Tamaki Futaba. The four of them quickly became friends. They went to an arcade once. Jurai tried to get a teddy bear for Hatoko, but ended up spending a lot of money to get one. Hatoko thanked him and said she would cherish it. The four of them also went to a summer festival together. Jurai thought of his new friends as the ideal couple and Hatoko was happy for him. However, this didn’t last forever.

One rainy day, Hatoko was coming back from her club activities. She found Jurai completely wet outside her house and used her umbrella to cover him from the rain. He told her that Tamaki and Shizumu had broken up. Jurai had gotten involved in their cheating mess and felt betrayed by them because he saw the kind of persons they actually were. Hatoko hugged him and consoled him. She said she would never betray him and would give her best to understand him. After this, Jurai wanted to quit being a chūni, but thanks to meeting a certain silver haired girl, he decided to continue. In their third year of middle school, Jurai told Hatoko his name was “Guiltia Sin Jurai”.

High school and the Literature Club[]

One year later, Hatoko and Jurai went to Senkō Private High School and joined the literature club. They met Sayumi Takanashi and Tomoyo Kanzaki. Later, their club advisor, Shiharu Satomi, asked them to take care of her little niece, Chifuyu Himeki. The little girl eventually became a club’s member and a trusted friend. One day, Hatoko and the others were enveloped in a bright light and awakened superpowers. Hatoko gained the ability to control the 5 elements: water, fire, earth, air and light. Jurai named it “Over Element”. They were expecting something big to happen, but in the end, nothing happened.

01

A black dragon?

During the next six months, Hatoko and the others spent their time using their powers to have fun. Once, Jurai wanted a black dragon in his arm, but he couldn’t draw it well. Hatoko tried to help, but her dragon didn’t match Jurai’s taste. So Tomoyo drew one similar to Hiei’s, which greatly pleased Jurai. Another time, the literature club took turns to write a novel. The girls wrote a novel about a boy with broken dreams and a girl with an illness, but Jurai ended up turning the story into a chūni story with superpowers.

One day, they were visited by the student council president, Mirei Kudō. She revealed she had a power and tried to fight them. She managed to steal Jurai’s power, but was subdued quickly by Sayumi. Mirei explained in tears that she was scared of the literature club because an anonymous person had told her they had powers as well. Hatoko became worried about this. Next day, Hatoko witnessed Jurai awakening “Dark and Dark of the End”. Because of the inextinguishable black flames, Jurai was in pain. Hatoko tried to help, freezing his arm, but to not avail. In the end, Sayumi cut his arm with a guillotine created by Chifuyu and sealed the burning arm in a separate dimension created by Chifuyu as well. The girls made Jurai promise to never use that power again.

One day, the literature club had their monthly simulation battle to test their abilities. Hatoko faced against Chifuyu, while Jurai and Tomoyo were observing. After that, they were visited by Mire Kudō again. This time she came to tell Jurai she accepts to be his girlfriend, leaving everyone speechless. It turned out that Mirei had misunderstood a letter from Jurai about the name he gave to her power. Jurai eventually cleared the misunderstanding and apologized to Mirei.

Days later, Hatoko noticed that Jurai was spending more time with Tomoyo and felt jealous. However, she didn’t say anything. After school, she was preparing dinner for Jurai, because his mother didn’t have time for it that day. She saw Jurai texting Tomoyo and asked what they were talking about, but he said that she wouldn’t understand it. This finally made Hatoko snap at him and go on a rant about how she just couldn't understand his chūnibyo behavior. Hatoko left the house running. She bumped into Sagami, who took her cellphone, but Hatoko didn’t notice. Once she stopped running, Hatoko noticed she was in an unfamiliar town. Unbeknownst to her, she had been trapped in a closed city created by Yanagi Akutagawa's power. By the riverside, she saw a mysterious man with a medical eyepatch in his right eye. This man was Hajime Kiryū. Hatoko talked with the man about the meaning of chūnibyou and he told her she shouldn’t worry about not understanding a chūni. Also, they talked about happiness. For Hatoko, happiness meant love. Hajime told her that happiness meant being someone else’s chosen one. Hatoko realized she wanted to be Jurai’s chosen one. At that moment, Hajime stood and made a signal to someone.

Then, Hajime told Hatoko to look at his left eye. She felt strange and collapsed to the ground. Hatoko lost consciousness and was surrounded by Hajime’s group. She was taken by Umeko Tanaka to Hitomi Saitō’s apartment. However, thanks to Sayumi’s new ability, Hatoko was transported to the literature club classroom. When she woke up, Jurai apologized to her, but Hatoko said she was the one who should apologize. Tomoyo apologized to Hatoko and explained that Jurai was spending time with her because he was giving her advice to write a novel for a light novel contest. Jurai said that even though he could say things she didn’t understand, he wanted Hatoko to be at his side. Then, he immediately changed to his chūni tone and offered his hand to Hatoko to follow him in his journey. Hatoko took Jurai’s hand and mentioned it was warm. The two childhood friends finally made amends. Next day, Shizumu gave back Hatoko’s phone to Jurai. After deleting the porn image Shizumu set as wallpaper in Hatoko’s phone as a prank, Jurai gave it back to Hatoko.

Days later, the literature club were having tennis matches. Hatoko and Sayumi showed their talent in tennis, unlike Jurai and Tomoyo, who were bad at sports. Hatoko used her power to create fireballs and launched them against Jurai, who couldn’t return them. Hatoko mentioned that she thought Jurai could return them since his power was a black flame.

03

A lucky or unlucky event?

Another day, the literature club decided to do cosplay, using Chifuyu’s power. The wrote their choices in papers and put them in a box. Each of them took a paper and did the cosplay written on it. Hatoko wore a sun costume, while Sayumi wore bloomers, Tomoyo wore a bikini armor and Chifuyu wore a straightjacket. They were about to take a commemorative photo, but someone knocked at the door. (In the anime, they did take the photo). Chifuyu deactivated her power and everyone’s attires disappeared. So Jurai ended up seeing everyone in their undergarments. Tomoyo quickly used her power to put on clothes and covered Jurai’s eyes. Once everyone put on clothes, they opened the door. It was their club advisor, Shiharu Satomi, who informed them about Chifuyu skipping school.

Hatoko was present when Madoka Kuki, Chifuyu’s friend, visited the literature club one day, so they could show her they weren’t a bad influence on Chifuyu. They failed at this, but Jurai eventually managed to fix Chifuyu and Madoka’s relationship. Hatoko and the rest of the girls were pleased with this. However, they also made fun of Jurai calling him “Knight Lolicon”.

With summer vacation near, the literature club decided to clean the club classroom. Hatoko was the most enthusiastic about this. On Jurai’s birthday, Hatoko and the other girls gave him an RPG game they created as a present. When Sayumi was absent one day, Jurai went to visit her at her house. In the club classroom, Hatoko had a serious talk with Tomoyo. Hatoko asked her if she liked Jurai, but Tomoyo was embarrassed and unable to answer. Hatoko declared confidently that she did like him. Hatoko didn’t want to lose against someone who couldn’t voice her own feelings.

07

Watching the stars together

In summer vacation, the Kushikawa family and the Andō family went to the beach for their annual vacation trip. Hatoko read some magazines and followed the charm techniques depicted to attract Jurai’s attention, but in the end, she succumbed to heatstroke. At night, she and Jurai sit on the beach and were watching the stars. They talked about the meaning of being someone’s chosen one. Jurai told her that the most important was the feeling of wanting to be chosen. Hatoko agreed with this and rest her head on Jurai’s shoulder. Hatoko realized she had become too obsessed with being chosen, that she had forgotten that the most important thing was her feelings for Jurai. Then, Hatoko calls him “Jurai” instead of “Ju-kun”, which surprises him. He tells her he prefers being called as always, so Hatoko calls him "Ju-kun" again. Inside her mind, Hatoko thinks she wants to keep calling him like that forever.

07B

Friends and Rivals

Back in school, Hatoko asked Tomoyo again if she liked Jurai. This time, Tomoyo answered yes. Then, both girls recognized each other as rivals and declared they didn’t intend to lose.

Anime Original Arc[]

Mirei Kudō was visited by Naoe Hagiura, an ex-member of the organization F. She controlled Mirei and used her body to attack the literature club. She stole Hatoko’s power and used it against her. Chifuyu protected Hatoko, but had her power stolen as well. With Tomoyo’s help, the group managed to escape and regrouped at a karaoke box. They deduced that Mirei was being controlled by someone. Jurai went to confront the possessed Mirei alone and tricked her into stealing his power, Dark and Dark of the End, forcing Naoe to leave Mirei’s body. Both Jurai and Mirei had their arms cut by a guillotine, so they could get rid of the inextinguishable black flames. Hatoko and the rest of girls were relieved when everything ended.

The Cultural Festival and Root of Origin’s Incident[]

08

The candidates to play Juliet

The Cultural Festival was near and the literature club decided to do a play, Romeo and Juliet. Hatoko and the rest of the girls wanted to play Juliet, so they let Jurai, who was going to play Romeo, choose his Juliet. In the end, Jurai chose Chifuyu so he didn’t have to choose between Tomoyo, Hatoko and Sayumi.

During one of the practices, Jurai asked Hatoko why she had chosen to play Rosaline. Hatoko answered that she wanted to be Juliet, but since Chifuyu was going to play that role, she chose Rosaline because she wanted to be a character loved by him. Their faces got reddened, so an embarrassed Hatoko quickly said that she was talking about Romeo, not Jurai.

One day, Chifuyu’s found out Jurai’s reason for choosing her and stopped coming to the club. Jurai managed to get fix the situation and the group was able to do the play successfully. In the final act, Chifuyu kissed Jurai for real, surprising Hatoko and the other girls. After the play, Hatoko and the others girls were seeing Jurai with cold eyes.

10

The strongest tag team?

After the Cultural Festival, the literature club invited Mirei Kudō to have fun in a tropical beach created by Chifuyu’s power. Hatoko tagged along Jurai to play beach volleyball against Sayumi and Mirei, who had stolen Tomoyo and Chifuyu’s powers. However, by combining their powers, Jurai and Hatoko managed to recreate a Tezuka Phantom-like technique and took the lead, but Mirei eventually stole Hatoko’s power. With Tomoyo, Chifuyu and Hatoko’s powers, Mirei laughed and thought she could finally have her revenge against Sayumi, but she immediately used her power to restore everyone’s powers. Then, Sayumi went after Mirei and quickly subdued her with a submission hold. Jurai, Hatoko and Tomoyo thought it looked more like they were playing instead of fighting. They were happy to see Mirei and Sayumi having fun, after all, this was their last year of high school.

The next day, Sayumi’s power, Root of Origin, went out of control and changed everyone. As a result, Hatoko became a yandere and acted really possessive around Jurai. Tomoyo returned to her Endless Paradox persona, Chifuyu became a high schooler and Mirei started acting as Jurai’s obsessive girlfriend again. Hatoko, Tomoyo, Mirei and Chifuyu didn’t notice the change and acted like they were always like that. Only Jurai and Sayumi noticed the change. When Root of Origin’s effects were cleared, Hatoko and the others returned back to normal.

The End of the Fairy War[]

After returning back to normal, the girls woke up in the literature club classroom, but Jurai was nowhere to be seen. Unbeknownst to Hatoko and the rest, Jurai had been kidnapped by Tamaki Hinoemata and was fighting her in a closed city, created by Yanagi Akutagawa’s power. Hatoko and the others started looking for Jurai, but because of Tamaki’s power, they couldn’t feel worried about his disappearance, so it was not a serious search. In a bus stop, Hatoko met Shizumu Sagami. She asked about Jurai, but Shizumu lied and said he didn’t know about his whereabouts. It was a while since they talked. After Shizumu’s break up with Tamaki and the end of his friendship with Jurai, they didn’t talk anymore. Hatoko nervously told him she wasn’t evading him and proposed to exchange email addresses. Then, they started talking about Jurai. Shizumu asked Hatoko if she liked Jurai. A reddened Hatoko nodded, but told him not to tell anyone. Shizumu asked if she really enjoyed listening to Jurai’s chūni talks. Hatoko said it was frustrating for her not to understand Jurai like Tomoyo did, but she had decided to stopped feeling like that. Now, she wanted to see Jurai properly. She wanted to be more like herself instead of acting like the understanding childhood friend. After that, Hatoko and Shizumu parted ways.

Later, Hatoko and the rest were contacted by Jurai. They all met at a karaoke box. Jurai revealed the truth about the Fairy War and Hajime Kiryū. The girls didn’t believe him, so Jurai summoned the fairy, Reatier, to prove his story. Hajime had defeated Fallen Black and was coming for them, so Jurai wanted to talk about their future course of actions, but Hatoko didn’t want to fight Hajime because she didn’t have a reason to do it. The other girls felt the same.

At that moment, Hajime appeared out of nowhere. He wanted to have a big battle against the literature club, but they refused. Then, Hajime told them they have all the reasons in the world to fight him. Hajime revealed that the literature club were characters created by him. He had written their whole lives. All of them were just following his script. Their feelings and lives were just fiction. After Hajime left, everyone was in silence. However, Hatoko made Jurai notice that Hajime’s words were lies and his story was full of holes. It was impossible for them to be characters created by him. The other girls felt the same. Then, Jurai finally understood what was in Hajime’s mind. Deciding to deal with Hajime alone, Jurai asked Hatoko, Sayumi and Chifuyu to retire from the war. Jurai only let Tomoyo tag along because she was Hajime’s sister and she could be the only one to change Hajime’s mind. Hatoko and the rest accepted this and told Reatier they wanted to retire. Hatoko’s memories and power were erased and she became a normal person again.

Hatoko END[]

In one of four possible futures, Jurai started dating Hatoko. They were in their third year of high school. They were still acting shy because they were too conscious of each other. Just holding hands was enough for them to get red as a tomato. They still haven´t announced their relationship to their families, but they suspected their families already knew. Still, Jurai wanted to announce it formally to Hatoko’s parents because that was the right way.

It was summer, so the couple had a picnic in a park. Jurai complimented Hatoko’s lunch boxes, which made her happy. Then, they saw a couple near them. The boyfriend was resting his head on his girlfriend’s lap, so they tried to do the same. Jurai rested his head on Hatoko’s lap, but stood up immediately after feeling the lower part of Hatoko’s boobs. An embarrassed Jurai apologized, but Hatoko said she didn’t mind. Next, it was Hatoko’s turn. She rested her head on Jurai’s lap like a child. She said it was not easy going out with someone, but she was happy because she was seeing sides of Jurai she never saw before. Jurai used to be the person Hatoko felt the most calm with, but now, Jurai was the person who made her heart beat the most. A smiling Hatoko asked Jurai to stay with her forever, to which he replied yes.
